- Subtract the start time from the end time.
- If the shift ends after midnight, add 24 hours first.
- Take away any unpaid break.
- For payroll, turn the minutes into a decimal by dividing by 60.
- Add the days together for the week.

Questions about counting hours worked
How many hours is 8 AM to 5 PM with a 30-minute lunch?
8 h 30 min, or 8.5 hours. The full span is 9 hours, and the unpaid lunch takes off half an hour.
Is 7.5 hours the same as 7 hours 30 minutes?
Yes. But 7:50 on a clock card is not 7.50 hours: 50 minutes is 0.83 of an hour, so 7:50 is 7.83 hours.
How do I count a shift that ends after midnight?
Enter the real start and end times. When the end is earlier than the start, the calculator counts it as the next day, so 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM is 8 h 30 min before the break.
Does this work out pay or overtime?
No. It counts time only. It shows how many hours go over 40 in the week, but overtime pay rules depend on your job, employer and state.
For the time between just two times, use the Time Duration Calculator. To add up loose lengths of time, use the Add and Subtract Time Calculator. The rules behind every result are on the methodology page.
